FLAT TAPPET & CAMSHAFT LOBE LUBRICATION PROBLEMS AND ZINC LEVELS
Capt'n Bob and Arlo asked what I knew about the zinc and phosphorus reduction in oils and the effects on flat tappet and camshaft lobe lubrication problems. This concern has been a recent topic at car shows that I have worked.
I was a guest speaker on WISCONSIN HOT ROD RADIO on September 22, 2007 to discuss the zinc phosphorus (ZDDP) problem. You can download the program from the WISCONSIN HOT ROD RADIO web site.
In 2005, the API (American Petroleum Institute and ILSAC (International Lubricant Standards Approval Committee, in an effort to guarantee catalytic converter performance in new vehicles, instituted standards that reduced the levels of zinc and phosphorus in API oils.
AMSOIL has complied with that in most of their oils, but at the same time they realize that there is a large amount of people that have classic cars, rebuild motors and have high performance older motors that need the zinc levels to stay high.
AMSOIL makes 5 oils with high concentrations of zinc and phosphorus to help with the flat tappet cam lobe problems:
All the above oils have at least 1230 ppm of phosphorus and 1375 ppm of zinc. Please read the Technical Service Bulletin for further details.
While I was adding this information to my website, I came across some other information that might be interesting for you to read about.
